“I come to this work with a passion for collective liberation and healing through the act of storytelling.”
SARAH EGGERS
Before becoming a therapist, I studied and taught literature and creative writing, and believe that narrative is how we human beings make sense of our lives, shape our identities, and create connection with others, past, present, and future.
I received my Masters in Marital and Family Therapy and Clinical Art Therapy from Loyola Marymount University in 2014. I also hold an MFA in Creative Writing from Hunter College in NYC. I have worked in community mental health, schools, and residential treatment facilities, offering individual, family, and group therapy services. I have also worked as an art therapist in residential psychiatric facilities and elsewhere. When I opened my private practice in 2017, I brought with me an understanding of the impacts on people’s lives of systems of oppression and the intergenerational trauma imposed by these systems, and a belief that in order to collaborate in healing for my clients, I must also be actively working to dismantle and disrupt these harmful structures.
In addition to my work as a therapist, I also do organizing work through White People for Black Lives and other antiracist organizations, provide pro-bono psychiatric evaluations to those seeking asylum, chair the social justice committee of a non-profit organization providing community-based mental health services, and facilitate nonviolent communication/community building workshops in community and carceral settings. I am also on the faculty of Antioch University Los Angeles, where I teach art therapy with a focus on social justice.
I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), and a Registered Art Therapist (ATR). Additionally, I hold a professional membership in the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT) and The American Art Therapy Association (AATA). I am fully trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), a modality used in the treatment of trauma, PTSD, and other psychiatric disorders (see my services page for more information). I am also certified in a number of other Evidence Based Practices (EBPs) such as Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP), and Seeking Safety, among others.
